Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Senator Kamina Johnson Smith has announced the appointment of Joan Thomas Edwards as Jamaica’s new High Commissioner to South Africa.

High Commissioner-designate Thomas Edwards is a career diplomat with over 33 years working in the Jamaican Foreign Service.

She is currently the Under-Secretary with responsibility for the Foreign Trade Division at the Ministry.

Mrs. Thomas Edwards served as Deputy High Commissioner at the Jamaican High Commission in London and Acting High Commissioner at the Jamaican High Commission in Pretoria.

Edwards is expected to assume her new duties on April 1 and will have jurisdiction over Jamaica’s relations with 18 countries in Southern and East Africa.
