Chief Operating Officer at the Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited, KFTL, Carlos Cabrera, is urging local importers to collect their shipping containers from the port to prevent future backlogs.

He says importers cited lack of warehouse space and financial difficulties as reasons for the delayed collection.

The COO says there was a notable backlog of containers after the Jamaica Customs Agency increased their security measures at the ports.

He says following the clear up of the backlog, several importers began to order more goods.

However, those containers started to arrive earlier than expected.

Cabrera says some of the containers have now surpassed their expected stay at the ports.

Meanwhile, Mr. Cabrera says the backlog of shipping containers at the port since October last year has been cleared.

He says an increase in permanent labour and additional equipment assisted in the clear up.
