Justice Minister Delroy Chuck says the mandatory component of the National Identification Systems, NIDS Bill that was struck down as unconstitutional by Chief Justice Bryan Sykes, was the Opposition’s idea.

The Opposition brought the matter before the Constitutional Court last year insisting aspects of the National Identication and Registration Act, NIRA including the mandatory component infringed upon citizens’ rights and freedoms.

Minister Chuck sought to explain the irony.

The Justice Minister says the NIDS bill would still be effective without the mandatory clause.

Meanwhile, he says the Government has decided against appealing the Constitutional Court ruling in the interest of time.
