Prime Minister Andrew Holness has revealed that coming legislative amendments will see the government imposing a mandatory minimum custodial sentence in excess of 10 years for people found guilty of Illegal Possession of a firearm.
He made the disclosure during an exclusive interview at Vale Royal with Abka Fitz-Henley.
Stiffer penalties for illegal firearm holders was previously announced by the Prime Minister last November during the JLP’s 78th Annual Conference.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, JCF’s, crime statistics, approximately 67 shootings have occurred since the start of 2022.
There were also 111 murders recorded during the first 22 days, indicating a 19 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.
Prime Minister Holness reiterated his personal exaggerated view that punishment for those found in possession of illegal firearms, should begin at the death penalty.
Prime Minister Holness says legal firearm holders will not be jeopardised by the legislation.
The prime minister noted that amendments to the Bail Act will also be put into consideration.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Holness says the government will re-engage the Opposition in one week concerning the re-implementation of states of public emergency.
