Opposition Spokesman on Local Government, Desmond McKenzie, is calling for the immediate suspension of administrative operations and the normal flow of funding to the Hanover Parish Council.

Mr. McKenzie is also calling on the Local Government Ministry to take over control of the Council and to launch a forensic audit.

This in the wake of media reports, that the Office of the Contractor General, OCG, has widened it’s investigations into the awarding of contracts at the Parish Council.

Nationwide News reported yesterday that the OCG last week interviewed a number of Councillors and Officers of the Council.

The interviews were reportedly sparked by a comment from the former Lucea Mayor, Shernet Haughton.

In an exclusive interview with Nationwide News last month, Ms Haughton suggested that she had information on council members that could bring the council into disrepute.

Mr. McKenzie says the nature of the comment should spark the immediate intervention of the Local Government Ministry, to ensure that the relevant documents are secured for scrutiny.

He says normal operations should not return to the Council, until strong internal controls are put in place, in the interest of transparency, accountability and securing value for taxpayer’s money.
