Local government minister, Desmond McKenzie, says some Jamaicans have been exploiting the plight of families left homeless by demolition in Coopers Pen, Trelawny.

The Coopers Pen demolition in early August was intended to remove the illegal occupiers of the privately owned lands.

On Wednesday, several shop owners in the community staged a protest after being served notices which ordered them to cease construction work.

The shop owners say they were given 30 days to remove the shops, failing which the structures would be demolished.

But, Minister McKenzie says the shopkeepers are constructing illegally in Coopers Pen. He says a campaign of misinformation is hampering the work being done by the government in Coopers Pen.
