Local Government Minister, Desmond McKenzie, says if it were up to him, firefighters wouldn’t have to negotiate for better wage and fringe benefits.

The fire brigade is one of a few public sector groups still negotiating their 2017 to 2021 wage agreement with the government.

Meanwhile, Minister McKenzie says discussions are underway to have the brigade handle it’s own emergency calls. He says the current system is unreliable and chaotic.

Desmond McKenzie was addressing the official opening ceremony of the Montego Bay Fire Boat Station in St. James on Friday. Four fire engines were also handed over at the ceremony.
