Legendary calypsonian icon, the Mighty Sparrow, has died.
Sparrow, whose given name is Slinger Francisco, passed away in New York on Sunday.
He had been ailing for some time.
He was 91.
His family confirmed that he died peacefully surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Grenada on 9 July 1935, Francisco moved to Trinidad as a child and went on to become one of the most important figures in the history of calypso.
He’s widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Caribbean music, with a career spanning more than seven decades.
He became renowned for combining memorable melodies with sharp wit, humour and incisive commentary on politics, relationships and Caribbean society.
Mighty Sparrow is best known for songs such as Jean and Dinah, Congo Man, Dan is the Man, and Saltfish.
