Transport Minister Mike Henry has asked for a review of the the acquisition of the Jamintel Building in downtown Kingston which is to be the new headquaters of the Transport Authority.
The building was purchased in March 2014 to accommodate the operations of the Authority which was said to have outgrown its current location at Maxfield Avenue.
Following a tour of the property, Minister Henry has instructed the board of the Authority to undertake an immediate review.
Minister Henry says the review is to determine, among other things, the rationale for the acquisition of the building, the suitability of the building for the Transport Authority’s purposes and needs and the cost and affordability of the purchase and proposed refurbishment of the building.
In 2014 it was reported that the TA would be spending some 4-hundred-and-40 million dollars to relocate its corporate offices to the Jamintel facility.
The building was purchased by the TA for 1-50 million, and is to be retrofitted at a cost of 2-hundred-and-90 million dollars.
