Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Morais Guy, is calling on the government to extend travel restrictions to other countries where new variants of COVID-19 have been detected.

The People’s National Party, PNP, says although it supports the government’s ban on UK travel, it’s not enough.

The PNP notes that the population is still exposed to a possible outbreak of the mutated virus from other countries.

In a statement this morning, Dr. Guy said scientific data suggest that the coronavirus variant in the UK has been detected in other countries.

He says cases have been detected in the Netherlands, South Africa, Denmark and Australia.

Dr. Guy says nationals from these countries have also been placed under travel restrictions from several European countries.

The Opposition Spokesman on Health is urging the government to take a more robust approach to preventing an outbreak.

Dr. Guy is further calling on the government to be transparent with the public about if a new strain of the virus has been detected in the country.

He elaborated that updates from the Pan-American Health Organization should be communicated to the public.

The Opposition Spokesman says the world should be concern about this new strain.

Dr. Guy reiterated that the PNP will hold the government accountable for the entry of the new strain of the virus in Jamaica.
