Opposition Spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, is calling on the government to allow the Office of Utilities Regulations, OUR, to mandate fare increase for public transport operators.

His call comes as some public transport associations are demanding a 100-percent fare increase and threatening to protest if their demands are not met by next Monday.

Mr. Phillips says it’s time the decision to grant a fare increase for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company and private-owned public transportation, be removed from the hands of the political directorate.

Mr. Mikael Phillips notes the public transport operators have been demanding a fare increase for years.

He says their threat to protest is due to frustration and he wants the Minister to meet with the stakeholders immediately and discuss the matter.
