The opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is accusing the government of sidelining members of Parliament, MPs, as it distributes water to constituencies across the island.
The MP for North West St Catherine, Damion Crawford, addressed the issue at a PNP press conference on Monday.
Crawford was responding to questions posed about the distribution of water to schools amid the worsening drought.
Recently, water minister, Matthew Samuda, said an additional $500 million have been approved to strengthen the government’s response.
Of that figure, Samuda said $200 million will be channelled through MPs to provide support in their constituencies, while $150 million will be allocated to municipalities.
Another $150 million will go towards trucking water to schools, health centres, hospitals and other critical infrastructure.
Crawford says MPs have not been consulted on the areas where the need is greatest in their constituencies.
