Opposition Spokesman on Water and Environment, Dr. Fenton Ferguson, says the PNP supports North Central St Catherine MP, Natalie Neita, in her pursuit of possible legal action against West Indies Alumina Company, Windalco, on behalf of her constituents.

Dr. Ferguson was responding to news that WINDALCO, has allegedly repeatedly discharged its effluent into the Rio Cobre.

He says this has resulted at times in disastrous fish kills, loss of livelihood, illness relating to infected fish consumption and contamination of water for domestic usage.

In a statement last week Dr. Ferguson is demanding that the residents receive proper compensation for the damages and inconvenience suffered as a result of the contamination by WINDALCO.

The opposition spokesman is expressing grave concern at the constant breaches and flagrant disregard for proper environmental practices and laws by selfish practitioners and companies in Jamaica.

He is calling on his counterpart, Government Minister Daryl Vaz, to urgently address the frequent environmental breaches by WINDALCO.

Dr. Ferguson is also calling on Minister Vaz to act decisively in concentrating the full force of his office to restore environmental best practice.

He says the Minister must implement all related penalties for not only WINDALCO but all companies and institutions in breach.

He’s calling on the Minister to instruct NEPA to map  and establish a working list of priority rivers and waterways, locate and warn all entities along these areas for potential hazards.

Dr. Ferguson is also calling for the constant monitoring, testing and prevention of destructive discharge into rivers and waterways.
