The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is calling for the Integrity Commission to probe the leasing of Sugar lands in St. Elizabeth for possible acts of corruption, nepotism and cronyism.

In a statement this afternoon, Opposition Spokesman on Agriculture, Victor Wright, raised concerns about a deal between the Ministry of Agriculture and a private company.

Mr. Wright says news reports indicate that the land allocation was done through an unsolicited proposal with no tender or financial proposal from the private company.

Mr. Wright says the lease arrangement should be immediately halted and a thorough examination of the contractual agreement be conducted by the Integrity Commission.

He is also taking SCJ Holdings to task, saying the entity is making it difficult for local farmers to access agricultural lands.

Efforts to contact the Managing Director of SCJ Holdings, Joseph Shoucair, and Minister without Portfolio in Agriculture, JC Hutchinson, were unsuccessful.
