The police are seeking to reassure the public that they’re equipped to tackle deep fake cybercrimes.
This is in response to a video making the rounds that falsely shows prominent Jamaican businessman Adam Stewart endorsing an investment fund.
Investigations have confirmed that the video is a deepfake, fabricated using artificial intelligence, AI.
The video, created without Stewart’s knowledge, consent, or involvement, promotes a fraudulent investment scheme.
A deepfake is a video of a person in which their face or body has been digitally altered by artificial intelligence to appear real.
These videos are typically used maliciously or to spread false information.
The JCF says the use of AI to impersonate individuals undermines public trust and creates new risks to financial security.
It is warning the public to exercise extreme caution when engaging with online investment offers, particularly those involving unsolicited messages or celebrity endorsements.
Head of Communication Forensics at the JCF’s Cyber Crimes Division, Deputy Superintendent Warren Williams, says Jamaica is partnering with global partners to tackle the growing cyber-security threat.
