Mayor of Port Maria, Richard Creary, is estimating that damage caused by flood waters, which drenched sections of the parish yesterday, could run into hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sections of St. Mary, St. Ann and Portland experienced heavy flooding, following torrential rainfall for much of yesterday.

St. Mary was the hardest hit.

Several businesses in and around Port Maria were inundated with flood waters, disrupting operations for several hours.

The Mayor says the cost tag for repairs and clean up will be substantial.

A multi-agency clean up effort is now underway across the parish capital.

The Mayor says several communities have been affected by the torrential downpour.

Authorities say at least one shelter has been opened so far, with 10 persons being housed overnight.

Municipal officials say other shelters stand ready across the parish should the weather deteriorate any further.

The Mayor is estimating that up to 200 households suffered seriously from the flooded.
