A Road Traffic Act Task Force has been established, as consultations begin on the demerit points system set to be implemented come October 1.
The task force will be chaired by State Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Marisa Dalrymple Philibert.
It will meet with public passenger operators on Friday as part of ongoing stakeholder discussions regarding the demerit points system.
The task force is mandated to look at the current issues faced by the backlog of traffic tickets and to find a practical, workable solution.
It is also to implement a new system that will hold road users to account in a timely manner.
Transport minister, Daryl Vaz, says the meeting forms part of the government’s commitment to ensuring transparency and public awareness ahead of the implementation.
The minister says the demerit points system is an important road-safety initiative designed to strengthen efforts to reduce traffic violations, improve driver accountability and ultimately save lives.
The ministry, working in partnership with other key stakeholders, says it will continue its public education and engagement efforts in the lead-up to the October 1 implementation date.
