Former Prime Minister, Edward Seaga has called for the Office of the Public Defender to be given prosecutorial powers.
He was speaking last night at a JLP mass rally in Half-Way-Tree, St. Andrew.
Edward Seaga made his first appearance on the political platform, since retiring as JLP leader in 2005.
The former Prime Minister who led the country from 1980 to 1989, is responsible for the creation of the Public Defender’s Office.
Mr. Seaga declared his unhappiness at the powers granted to the office, through the Interim Public Defender’s Act.
Mr. Seaga wants the legislation to be revised, to allow the Public Defender to serve more Jamaicans who’ve been deprived of their human rights.
Mr. Seaga says whichever party forms the next government, must ensure that Jamaicans are fully protected by the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms.
