All categories of serious crime, except for break-ins and aggravated assault are down in the Police Area 2 Division, of St Ann, St Mary and Portland.

Giving details at a media conference today, Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Elbert Nelson, says crime across the division had declined by 6%, with murders down by 13%, up to August 17 compared to the same period last year.

There have been seven fewer murders over the period from January 1 to August 17 this year, compared to last year. Fifty-five murders were committed last year up to this time, compared to 48 this year, across the three parishes.

He says Portland continues to be the parish least affected by violent crime with seven murders so far this year, a 22% decrease on the figures to this point last year.

ACP Nelson says St Mary also saw a decline in murders, down 43%, from 15 last year to eight so far this year.

However, St Ann is seeing a marginal increase of 5% in murder.
