Six people have died after a large fire broke out in a residential building in Brooklyn, New York City early Thursday morning.
Several others, including firefighters, were hurt in the blaze.
The New York City Fire Department says the fire was first reported at around 1:40 am local time.
It says more than 230 fire and emergency medical personnel were despatched to the scene, near Sunset Park.
The crew included specialists in hazardous materials as a result of the presence of a lithium-ion battery, though it’s not clear whether it was linked to the blaze.
The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani says he’s heartbroken by the deaths, and has asked New Yorkers to take a moment to pray for the full recovery of those who were injured.
