Only twenty-eight of the sixty-one hurricane shelters in St. Catherine meet required sanitary conditions.

Chief Public Health Inspector for St. Catherine, Richard Baker, made the disclosure at the general monthly meeting of the St. Catherine Parish Council yesterday.

Baker says his public health team found sanitary conditions at the majority of the 61 hurricane shelters to be in a very poor state.

They’ve condemned two shelters – one in Old Harbour Bay and and one in Troja.

Baker warned the Council not to perpetuate unhealthy living conditions.

The majority of hurricane shelters in St. Catherine are at community centres and schools.
