The Trinidad and Tobago government has added an exemption clause to a bill proposing to raise the age limit for alcohol and tobacco use.

The clause allows people over 18 but under 21 to supply or be in possession of alcohol and tobacco products during their lawful employment.

Attorney General John Jeremie presented the exemption among other amendments during the final stage of debate on the Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2026 in the lower house on Wednesday night.

The bill is proposing to raise the minimum age for the purchase or consumption of alcohol and tobacco to 21.

It’s also seeking to move the legal age for cannabis use and gambling to 25 years.

The bill is to be debated in the Senate today, Friday.
