At least two senior attorney’s are opposed to Chief Justice Bryan Sykes endorsement of judge only trials.

Attorney-at-law, Bert Samuels, says trial by jury for serious offences is a necessary component of a functioning democracy.

Justice Sykes presented evidence to suggest Jury trials are on their way out of the Justice System.

However, Mr. Samuels believes that principle must take precedence over expediency in understanding Jamaica’s history.

He was joined by attorney-at-law, Dr Lloyd Barnett, who argues that jury trials are fundamental in guarding against the capture of the judicial system by the government.

Dr Lloyd Barnett, attorney-at-law.

He was speaking on Nationwide at Five on Friday.
