British High Commissioner Asif Ahmad, says the UK has no intention of using economic threats to secure policy change in Jamaica.
As part the thrust by the UK to strengthen ties with the Caribbean, the High Commissioner outlined a wish for the region to partner with the UK on values.
As part of those values, he pointed to social concerns such as LGBT rights and the death penalty.
Mr. Ahmad was speaking yesterday at the UK High Commissioners’ Residence on Trafalgar Road in St. Andrew.
He says utilizing force to achieve a diplomatic outcome is an outmoded concept.
However, as renewed calls for the death penalty as a means to tackle Jamaica’s crime problem increase, Mr. Ahmad made it clear this has ramifications for security cooperation.
