His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon of Norway is scheduled to visit Jamaica in his role as Global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme, UNDP.
The visit is set for November 18 to 20.
Since assuming the ambassadorship in 2003, the Crown Prince has been promoting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, with particular focus on Goal 1, which aims to eradicate poverty, and Goal 14, focused on conserving life below water.
According to the UNDP, Jamaica’s marine and coastal communities are experiencing increased vulnerability due to climate change and other drivers of change.
This threatens both the resilience of ecosystems and nature-based livelihoods, including tourism and fisheries, which are vital to local communities.
During his visit, Crown Prince Haakon will gain first-hand insight into how Jamaica, with support from Norway and the UNDP, is working to strengthen its ocean economy and improve resilience in vulnerable communities.
This includes initiatives such as addressing illegal fishing through the UNDP’s Blue Resilience Programme.
While in Jamaica, Crown Prince Haakon will meet with local authorities, young people, and representatives from various communities to discuss challenges and solutions related to oceans, climate change, and poverty.
