Documents obtained by the New York Times say the United States could see up to 3,000 deaths per day from the coronavirus by June 1.
As the US government pushes to reopen the crippled economy, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data and modelling shows 200 thousand infections could be the reality at the start of next month, leading to thousands of daily deaths.
The White House disputed the findings.
White House spokesman Judd Deere says the document quoted by the New York Times is not a White House document nor has it been presented to the Coronavirus Task Force or gone through interagency vetting.
He says the data is not reflective of any of the modeling done by the task force or data that the task force has analysed.
