Minister with responsibility for Education, Karl Samuda, says the UTech Academic Staff Union is being unreasonable in demanding that the government immediately pay the full amount owed to teachers.

Lecturers at the University of Technology have been on strike since last Friday.

They’re reportedly owed some $4 billion in retroactive payments.

They’ve been offered only a portion of the sum as an immediate payment, with the remainder to be paid at another time.

Minister Samuda says the government will not be borrowing money to pay the teachers.

Minister Samuda says although the temptation is strong, the government is determined to hold strain.

The Education Minister says UTECH received a large portion of the last budget increase.
