Satellite images have revealed that Venezuela is expanding military bases near its border with Guyana and deploying forces to the jungle frontier.

This as President Nicolás Maduro ramps up his threats to annex the oil and mineral rich Essequibo region, an area long accepted to be Guyanese territory.

Maduro pledged at mediation talks with Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali last December not to take military action against Guyana.

But images shared by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, CSIS, in Washington suggest a buildup of forces.

The CSIS says the footage of the Venezuelan military conducting tank drills just a stone’s throw from Guyana, is proof of Maduro’s duplicitous policy of diplomacy.
