The youth arm of the ruling JLP, Young Jamaica, has condemned Opposition Leader Mark Golding and the People’s National Party, for what it describes as attempts to undermine the Local Governance Act and the operations of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation.

This follows Thursday’s sitting of the Corporation, which ended in chaos, after PNP councillors renewed their call for JLP Councillor, Joel Williams to resign as Mayor.

The Corporation is evenly split along party lines, with 11 Councillors on the PNP benches and 11 on the JLP side.

The PNP Councillors believe they should have the Mayorship, given that they won the popular vote in the constituency coming out of the recent Local Government Elections.

But nothing in law supports that position.

In a statement to the media, Young Jamaica accused the Opposition of fostering political division.

According to the organisation, the action of the PNP sets a dangerous precedent of partisan interference.

Young Jamaica also criticized the apparent silence of civil society groups on the issue.

The group says the PNP’s action is an attempt to usurp the Clarendon Municipal Corporation and is an attack on Jamaica’s democracy.

The group has called on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica, its commissioners, and the wider public to denounce the PNP’s actions and reaffirm their commitment to the rule of law.

Young Jamaica has also called on senior PNP members to intervene.

The organisation advises the PNP to challenge the matter in the courts if it is convinced of its position.
