Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, says the number of Guillain Barre Syndrome GBS cases in Jamaica now stands at 30.

GBS is known to cause paralysis, severe back pain and difficulty chewing or swallowing.

It affects some patients who suffer from the Zika virus. Extreme cases of GBS may be fatal. Dr. Tufton says the cases of GBS in Jamaica is cause for concern. He says along with general monitoring of the Zika virus, the Ministry is keeping a watch on GBS.

The Health Minister says the majority of the current cases of GBS in Jamaica are Zika related.

Minister Tufton says to treat GBS in the public health sector is very costly.

Dr. Tufton was speaking during a function at Agro Grace Headquarters in St. Catherine today.

Agro-Grace says it’s trying to mitigate the far reaching effects of the zika virus.

The company launched its In-2-Care Mosquito Trap and its Aquatain AMF Liquid Mosquito Film products which may be used to kill the aedes aegypti mosquito and its larvae.

Meantime .. Agro-Grace General Manager, Olive Downer-Walsh, says the new mosquito trap is part of the company’s efforts to contribute to the fight against vector-borne diseases.
