Second Secretary in charge of Economic & Political Affairs at the Cuban Embassy in Jamaica, Rolado Davila, has blamed the decades-old trade embargo by the United States for the current energy crisis gripping the country.
Speaking on Nationwide at Five on Monday, Mr. Davila, says the embargo has prevented the nation from securing much-needed parts and fuel to maintain its aging power infrastructure.
Rolling blackouts have repeatedly hit the country over the last few weeks, sometimes lasting days.
Mr. Davila says the Cuban government are looking far and wide to secure the necessary hardware to solve the electrical instability.
Both Russia and Venezuela, were key allies who aided the Cuban government in terms of support despite the more than half a century long US embargo. However, both countries are now faced with their own internal crises and economic sanctions.
Mr. Davila says the US sanctions put other global suppliers on edge and results in significant increases in the cost of fuel and parts.
