Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness has convened Jamaica’s first multi-stakeholder National Road Safety Planning meeting, as there’s increasing concern that Jamaica could miss its target to slash road deaths in half by 2030.
State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Senator Abka Fitz-Henley, represented the prime minister at the National Road Safety Planning meeting in St. Andrew on Thursday.
Despite an approximately 20 per cent reduction in road fatalities so far this year, the government indicated that it’s not satisfied.
In 2020, Jamaica recorded a whopping 433 road fatalities. The target was then set to cut road fatalities in half by 2030.
The meeting had representatives from the National Road Safety Council, the justice, health and national security ministries, along with the private sector and academia.
Minister Fitz-Henley told stakeholders that the government has taken an informed and data-driven approach to addressing the issue of road fatalities.
