The Supreme Court in The Bahamas on Tuesday ordered school administrators to return to work after they initiated industrial action at the start of the new school year.
According to the Tribune, the court granted an interim injunction against The Bahamas Educators Managerial Union, its officers and members, barring them from taking part in any strike or other industrial action.
The education ministry and the attorney general sought the intervention after some 90 per cent of the union’s 500-plus members withdrew their service.
The withdrawal forced early dismissal across the archipelago, with 40,000 students sent home at midday.
The union says its grievances include an expired industrial agreement, outstanding promotions, and longs standing administrative vacancies.
In its order on Tuesday, the court said in addition to returning to work, union officials and members are prohibited from sick leave without a valid sick certificate.
The union is entitled to apply to have the interim order varied or discharged.
The parties are due to return to court at 10 am on Thursday.
