A woman has been charged with faking a kidnapping.
She has been identified as 36-year-old Alecia Watkins, also called ‘Renae’ of Petersfield, Westmoreland.
Reports are that at about 7:43 pm on August 15, the father of Watkins’ child allegedly received a photo and voice note that she had been kidnapped. A demand was made for $600,000.
The matter was reported to the Savanna-la-Mar Police and an investigation launched.
The police report that they received information on Monday, August 17 that Watkins had returned home.
She was taken to the police station where she was interviewed. The polcie say their investigation revealed that the kidnapping claim had been fabricated. Watkins was subsequently charged with creating public mischief.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force is cautioning the public about making false reports. It says the act diverts resources away from genuine emergencies.
The police warn that perpetrators will face prosecution.
