Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck says the cabinet is currently in discussions about potential changes to the Firearms Act 2022 to allow plea bargaining outside the mandatory minimums.

The Minister was responding to questions following a media briefing on Friday.

The country’s legal fraternity and other stakeholders have called for judges to have their discretion restored in firearm-related offences in exceptional circumstances.

Following discussions with the Jamaica Bar Association and the Advocates Association, the Justice Minister says he now has their recommendations in hand, and further discussions will be had.

The Firearms Act will be up for a full review following its fifth year in 2027.

The Justice Minister says while changes to the legislation are being considered, it should be reminded the review and amending of legislation is a lengthy process.

Delroy Chuck, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs.
