Prime Minister, Dr. Andrew Holness says there’s a hypocrisy in the country over crime, as civil society and professional groups that protest over the Firearms Act are silent when illegal guns are used to kill innocent Jamaicans.
The prime minister was speaking Friday, during a visit to the home of a woman who was killed by gunmen earlier this week.
He has reiterated that the government will be review the 2022 legislation but has vowed to make it tougher on criminals who possess illegal guns.
Shaloy Smikle reports.
Reports are that the woman, 25-year-old Orneilia ‘Nana’ Walker, was at her gate on Sunday at about 7PM when she was sprayed with bullets by gunmen.
She died, leaving behind a toddler. The gunmen fled the scene in a waiting motorcar.
On Friday, Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Holness, visited Walker’s family in Tower Hill in his West Central St. Andrew constituency to offer his condolences.
He promised the family that those responsible will be brought to justice.
The Prime Minister’s comments come amid calls from lawyers and advocates for the government to revise the Firearms Act.
Dr Holness re-affirms that the government will revise the Act, but to make it harsher.
The Prime Minister went further.
He questioned the deafening silence from those same groups when it comes to the people who illegally possess guns and use them to take lives.
