The Caribbean Community, CARICOM Secretariat, says it’s gravely concerned by the continuing deterioration of the security situation and the social circumstances in Haiti.
It says the continued breakdown in law and order, and its distressing effect on the people of Haiti, is intensifying.
The organization says Haiti’s fraught situation is exacerbated by the inability of the security forces to address the ongoing violence.
Several social media videos show citizens taking cover as gunshots rang out in the streets.
The Secretariat says the unrest is having a negative impact on the already weak economy leading to even more mass demonstrations.
It says social conditions and the limited availability of food has worsened and require immediate attention from the international community.
It says it’s calling on all stakeholders to engage meaningfully with the aim to find a way forward and to put the country first and address the situation urgently.
Following discussions in the past weeks, the CARICOM Secretariat says it remains available to assist and work with international partners to mobilize financial and technical resources.
This is to facilitate a process towards normalization and ultimately the holding of free, fair and credible general elections.
