The Minister of Agriculture, Industry, Commerce, and Fisheries Karl Samuda says Jamaica will be aggressively tapping into the CARICOM market to ensure that the sugar industry remains viable.
He was speaking in Parliament yesterday when he opened the 2016 Sectoral Debates in Parliament.
The Minister says Jamaica will also have to end the practice of selling its raw sugar, and re-importing it as refined sugar at a higher cost.
He says sugar factories will have to start generating their own energy to keep the overall industry afloat.
Meanwhile, Minister Samuda says those who criticize the sugar industry have not offered any viable alternative to replace the industry.
He says sugar industry remains the most viable industry in the county.
