National Security Minister, Dr Horace Chang, says the intensification of the anti-gang legislation will be one of the measures used this year to address the increase in murders across the island.

The Jamaica Constabulary Force, JCF, is reporting a 32.1 per cent increase in murders across the island within the first week of this year compared to the same period last year.

In its latest statistics, the JCF reported 37 murders being committed between January 1 and 8 this year compared to the same period last year which recorded 28.

Dr Chang says internal adjustments are also being made within the JCF.

The JCF’s report indicates that serious crimes have seen a 16 per cent decline within the first week of this year and 2021. Shootings have also declined by 10 per cent.

However, Dr Chang says the issue of illegal firearms continues to pose a challenge.

Dr. Chang says amendments to the Firearms Act should be brought to the House by February.
