Nationwide News understands that a Policeman detained in connection with the brutal murder of Woman Corporal Judith Williams has retained prominent attorney Peter Champagnie as his legal worries mount.
The 54 year old Policewoman was shot six times last week in Franklyn Town area while on her way home. She died days later from injuries sustained.
Nationwide News understands that the Policeman detained is a Constable who’s assigned to the protective services of the Constabulary Force. He’s was taken into custody last night and questioned today about his whereabouts when armed men attacked Woman Constable Williams.
The Constable remains in custody at this hour at a lock up in the Corporate area.
Our sources say the Constable has been detained on reasonable suspicion of murdering Woman Corporal Williams but has not yet been charged in relation to that case. The Police Constable was charged just after 4:00 this afternoon in relation to an assault on his girlfriend a year ago.
He’s to appear in Court next week Wednesday on the assault charge.
Police sources tell our news center that the same Constable was also questioned a few years ago in relation a gun attack in Harbour View which claimed the life of Detective Sergeant Courtney Simpson.
At the time he was gunned down, Sergeant Simpson was the bodyguard of then State Minister Julian Robinson.
Detective Sergeant Simpson was murdered on April 8 2013.
A day after he was killed Nationwide News had reported that a Policeman was taken in for questioning in relation that murder. But the Constabulary issued a statement and denied that the Policeman was questioned.
The murder of Woman Corporal Williams’ had attracted condemnation from holders of some of the highest offices in the land including Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller, National Security Minister Robert Montague, Opposition Spokesman Peter Bunting and US Ambassador to Kingston Luis Moreno.
Yesterday, the JCF indicated that a statement would be issued today regarding its investigation into the murder of Woman Constable Williams. But up to news time that had not been forthcoming.
Our sources last night, National Security Minister Bobby Montague requested from the Police Commissioner an update on the investigation into the murder of Woman Corporal Williams.
Our sources say yesterday the Commissioner reacted to the Constable being implicated in the murder Corporal Williams by reminding senior officers of his commitment on September 15, 2015 when he was sworn into office.
Meanwhile, Mr. Champagnie, is confirming that his client, a Police Constable, has been arrested on reasonable suspicion of murder.
The attorney is questioning whether the Police have charged his client with assault in order to given themselves more time to pursue the murder investigation.
Mr. Champagnie says his client is protesting his innocence.
