The Electoral Office of Jamaica, EOJ, has completed its final count of ballots for all 63 constituencies in the September 3 General Elections.
In a statement this afternoon, the EOJ says the final count, shows the Jamaica Labour Party, JLP, won 48 seats while the People’s National Party, PNP, secured 15.
The EOJ says that under Section 47 of the Representation of the People Act, ROPA, an application for a magisterial recount may be filed within four days after the day on which the returning officer declared a candidate elected.
An attorney representing the JLP’s East Westmoreland candidate, Danielle Lawrence, tells Nationwide that a magisterial recount has been requested.
Mr. Lawrence, on the preliminary count, beat the PNP’s Luther Buchanan, by only 8 votes.
However, after the official count, the two candidates were tied.
The constituency’s Returning Officer was called on to cast the deciding ballot.
Both candidates’ names were placed in an empty box. Buchanan’s name was pulled from the box. Following which a vote in his favour was cast breaking the tie.
Mr. Lawrence’s Lawyer, O’Neill Brown, says the Magisterial Recount is scheduled for this Friday morning at 10.
