Health and Wellness Minister, Dr Christopher Tufton, says medical experts are assessing whether Jamaica is now experiencing community transmission of the coronavirus.
Community spread suggests that cases are present across the country but experts are unable to find the origin of those affected by the virus.
He notes that technocrats had predicted that approximately 1-point-5 million Jamaicans could contract the coronavirus.
Dr Tufton’s urging Jamaicans not to panic but to continue to follow the anti-COVID-19 protocols.
He says Jamaica’s moving to the community spread stage and must prepare for that increase.
In the meantime, Dr Tufton says the Opposition Leader is misinformed to suggest that the Cabinet rejected expert advice to tighten curfew and restrictions during the ‘Emancipendence’ holidays.
The Opposition Leader suggested this has led to the recent spike in COVID 19 cases.
When pressed on whether health officials advised the Cabinet to tighten restrictions over the holiday period, Dr Tufton said Cabinet deliberations are secret.
