Former Prime Minister Bruce Golding says Jamaica’s failure to transform itself into a republic at this point is a disappointment.
He’s reacting to news that Barbados at midnight Tuesday morning formally cut ties with the British monarchy.
Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as Barbados’s Head of State – ending 394 years of now indirect British monarchial rule.
During the ceremony, the Royal Standard flag representing the queen was lowered and Dame Mason, was sworn in as president.
However, Mr. Golding says the genesis of Jamaica’s quest to become a republic is nearly three decades in the making.
Mr. Golding says the Charter of Rights which was passed in 2011 formed part of a suite of constitutional reforms many of which are overdue as of today.
