Hundreds of schools in France are closed on Friday as students continue to protest about school conditions.

The demonstrations, over a lack of teachers, overcrowded classrooms and run-down buildings, started earlier this week in Paris then spread across the country.

The education ministry tells French media that 65 school staff have been injured, including 40 teachers. It says close to 2,000 arrests were made on Thursday alone.

The justice ministry says the situation has escalated from high-school student demonstrations to a public order disturbance.

The BBC is showing images with police personnel in Brest, western France, using tear gas against some protesters.

There are also images showing a burnt pile of belongings outside a school entrance in Paris.
