Governor-General of Jamaica Sir Patrick Allen has sent a letter to Bahamian Governor-General, Cornelius Smith, expressing sympathy to the people of the Bahamas.

The Abaco and Grand Bahama islands of the Bahamas were devastated by Hurricane Dorian this week leaving at least 30 people confirmed dead.

In his letter today, Sir Patrick described the rising death toll as distressing.

He says this unprecedented disaster’s regrettable consequences will be with the country for a long time to come.

Sir Patrick says he trusts that the early assistance from regional and international entities will have minimized further loss of life and that the recovery efforts will be undertaken speedily.

Sir Patrick says Jamaica joins with the leaders of neighbouring countries and all citizens of goodwill, in praying for favourable weather conditions for the rest of the hurricane season.

The Head of State also says Jamaica supports efforts by the Bahamas to adopt such relevant recovery strategies as will reduce the prospects of future disasters such as this most recent one.
