Opposition Spokesman on Health and Wellness, Dr Morais Guy, is encouraging the government to immediately create new strategies to accelerate the take up of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines.

The current existing stocks of 150-thousand vaccines are set to expire in less than ten days.

In a statement today, Dr. Guy said mixing vaccine brands is a low-hanging fruit, as hundreds of Jamaicans are overdue for second doses of the Pfizer vaccines.

However, he said, since the Government is unable to confirm dates for Pfizer shipments, these persons should be offered the AstraZeneca.

Dr. Guy said such a decision would be timely, as the United States recently joined several European countries in accepting the use of mixed vaccines.

He said with the approval for mixing and matching by the US Food and Drug Administration, the way should now be clear for Jamaica to adopt such a policy.

The Opposition spokesman said in past Jamaica has relied on FDA approval of several drugs for use in the local market.

Dr. Guy said all stops should be pulled out by the Government to ensure that all expiring AstraZeneca vaccines in the country are used up before the imminent expiry date.

He called for full mobilization of medical professionals to work along with the Health and Wellness Ministry to ensure a national effort to use up the vaccines.

He said all the existing barriers and logistical issues must be cleared in order to make the process simpler including the mandatory provision of a TRN to access vaccination.
