Science, Energy and Technology Minister, Fayval Williams, says the Data Protection Bill will have hefty fines and penalties for breaches.
The long-awaited legislation was passed in the House of Representatives on Tuesday with no amendments and bipartisan support.
It was piloted by Minister Williams.
She says legislation will empower an information Commissioner to conduct audits on firms that collect people’s data to ensure they are using that data legally.
Minister Williams says the government will also engage in a robust public education campaign on the legislation.
