Parts of Bermuda are already being affected by rain and heavy winds as Hurricane Lee bears down on the British overseas territory.

The Bermuda Electric Light Company says over 2,000 customers on the island of about 64,000 people, are without power.

Areas where storm-related outages have been reported include Sandys, St George’s, Pembroke, Devonshire, Smiths, Warwick, Paget, Southampton and the capital Hamilton.

Hurricane Lee is currently a Category One storm.

Data from reconnaissance aircraft indicates that the maximum sustained winds are near 90 miles per hour with higher gusts.

Weakening is forecast, but Lee is expected to remain a large and dangerous hurricane for the next couple of days.
