The Jamaica Public Service, JPS, says the exorbitant bills sent to its customer, Joan Schaaffe, is as a result of increased usage due to illegal connections to her meter.

The bill shows current charges of $56-thousand for May, and a balance brought forward of $543-thousand.

Ms. Schaaffe claims she’s unaware of any illegal connections.

Minster of Science, Energy and Technology, Fayval Williams says they’ve instructed the Office of Utilities Regulations, OUR, to conduct an audit of the light and power company, and submit a report within six weeks.

Minister Williams, in response to questions about the integrity of smart meters, says the devices will also be audited.
