Justice Minister, Delroy Chuck, is encouraging members of the country’s criminal underworld to utilise his ministry’s Restorative Justice programme, instead of escalating gang conflicts across the country.
Minister Chuck says he’s used the programme effectively in his North East St. Andrew constituency.
The Restorative Justice Programme is used as an alternative conflict resolution measure before matters are taken to court.
Generally, matters before the parish court that would have a maximum three-year sentence are recommended for restorative justice.
Coordinator of the Justice Ministry’s Restorative Justice Unit, Andriene Lindsay, says the unit was called to intervene in almost 2-thousand matters in 2019.
